Rules query: Does VBU change during a game?

We played our first game of Basic Impetus last night and inevitably it threw up some queries several of which have been answered by a browse through this forum. However, I am still puzzled about the impact of permanent losses on a unit.

Does the VBU of a unit for firing, combat and cohesion tests reduce as permanent losses are received? Or does it remain at the original value until the unit is routed?
For example we had a unit of hoplites fail its cohesion test and take 2 permanent losses from its Persian opponent bow fire? When the hoplites charged they fought with their full original VBU of 5, but no Impetus bonus since they were worn. Was that right?

Also should you complete all the firing at a unit before taking a cohesion test or does it have to test each time a separate enemy unit causes Damage during the turn?

Thanks
John Confused

hello John, welcome on board.

Permanent losses do reduce the VBU!! So your hoplites had to fight with a VBU=3 (and no Impetus bonus).
Basic Impetus is pretty deadly and the cohesion test is fundamental, more than the dice you roll to get hits.
The key is to put your troops in condition not to make bad tests. Of course bad uck matters.

As for the test, you perform a test after every shot (or melee).
For example if I shoot with a Skirmisher at your Hoplite Unit and achieve at least a hit (a 6 or a double 5), then you have to test. After this test you may receive another shoot from another S and if the latter S get a hit, then you will have to make another test and this time already Disordered (due to the previous test: even if you pass you are always disordered).

Tactical suggestion: protect your best shocking troops with S to be able to charge the enemy in the best condition (you can interpenetrate your S at the right moment). You will soon realize that (with some few exception) S will nullify other S shooting. They cannot even contact and melee. Don't worry, screening is their major role.
