 Question on rallying

We played our first game of the full rules and had a great time. After studying Opportunity so much to make sure I understood it, it only was used once in our game. I'm assuming that's because we aren't familiar with the rules enought, yet, to properly appreciate how it can be used. Is opportunity used a lot in your games?

Something did come up that I couldn't find anything prohibiting it in the rules, so we allowed it. Can a unit try to rally from disorder even while still in contact with an enemy unit (in melee)?

All in all, a great, fun game. Looking forward to my next one. I think we are going to try Mongols and Russians.

Not in my case so far Smile . I'm still too influenced by my current games (basically DBMM) Very Happy

Interesting question! Question I find no references about the rules forbidding it. I would assume it is not possible, but what happens in Impetus when something isn't specifically allowed or banned? Should we used The Mother of All Rules, Lorenzo? Very Happy

if in melee you cannot rally. This is written in par. 2.6.3 (Disordered Unit), but I agree that the same note should have also been repeated in the Rally paragraph. Of course consider in melee also supporting Units.

As for Opportunity it is not yet very used. This is for 2 reasons
1) Ancient wargames are not accustomed with Opportunity
2) You have to think of it in advance, an this is not always easy under the pressure of the battle Mad Smile .

I think that Opportunity is very good above all for shooters.

One tactic that I suggest is to use few S to protect your main line and other S placed behind and in opportunity.
If the line is charged the S in opportunity will perform an indirect fire before contact, something with a similar effect to pilum (and if you have the Roman you can add this to pilum!!).

Anyway instead of being stationary because you don't know what to do with that Unit place it in Opportunity, even if the enemy seems still far away
Of course you can always renounce the opportunity status and act in your own active phase.
Opportunity is a sort of defensive order.

The mother of all rules should be applied whenever you can find the solution in the rule book.
My suggestion is that after 5 minutes of search don't waste other time, use the mother of all rules and have fun. Then ask here in the forum Wink

It took us quite a few games to really get into using opportunity ... but once you get used to using it then it becomes very important, because you can use the move when something gets into charge range it is great for setting up interception charges to cover flanks etc.
