CALLIANO 1487
Scenario for Basic Impetus
On 23 April 1487 3,000 Imperial troops passed the Venetian border to conquer the town of Rovereto. The surprise attack was repulsed and a regular siege was laid.
Venice reacted with some difficulties as the Imperial army quickly grew till 15,000 troops.
The town capitulated after 49 days but lack of money led to several desertions within the Imperial ranks.
Rovereto was abandoned on July 10. The Venetians, now 10,000 strong, followed the retiring enemies but were attacked by surprise on August 10 near Calliano.
The battle was very confused. At first the Imperial routed several Venetian troops but were themselves routed by a Venetian cavalry counter charge. After more than 3 hours the battle ended with no winners and loosers. Both side lost around 1000 troops, among them the Venetian general Sanseverino.
