A quick question. What does it mean when a unit in the list has two points costs.

i.e. spartan hoplites - 33 (25)

My rulebook is on the way and I realize that this question may very well be answered.

the number in parenthesis is the cost of a rear Unit in a Large Unit. For example the Celtic FL have 12(9). If you pay the second Unit 9 then you must use it to form a Large Unit (is like you pay 21 pts for the Large Unit). You can pay both Units 12 and decide case by case to deploy "in depth" or not.
