I've finished painting and basing a couple of units of Numidian light horse for my Carthage force. I've based them as suggested (8x6 cm) with some terrain on the base and they look loose and good.

The next unit I've started is a base of Punic Cavalry (CM). This got me to thinking (and experimenting with unpainted models, bases, and blue-tac), if I based the heavier cavalry in a solid line on a 8x3cm base (like FP) the cavalry would look nice and tight, and would really contrast against the lighter Numidians.

Can anyone suggest a reason (rules or otherwise), why I should hesitate to reduce the base depth for this unit?

well, you get an advantage as less easier to be contacted on the flank, btw you get some more chances that the flank charge become a rear charge.

But honestly unless you are playing in a competition with "competitive" gamers" I cannot see problems. In case of competition you can bring with you a 8x3cm base (an extension) and in case of flank attack use this to see where the charge would exacly contact your base. You don't need a slotta base, just use this extension when required and then remove from the battlefield.

Similar problems occour when you have to retreat or when you are interpenetrated. The "extension" can solve all this problems.


If you decide to use same bases 8x6cm 3 Numidian figs are enough while 7-8 Punic cavalry are perfect. The difference in number is enough to differentiate the 2 troops. But my suggestion is to follow your taste.

You could do just place the Cavalry in a single line on the 'correct' size base. You do not need to fill the base.

Actually all my armies are DBx and I use movement trays so my stuff is all 9cm wide but as I only play with my mates who do the same its works ok.

I am going to play Impetus and B.I. in 28mm and have also decided to base cav of all kinds on 60mm depth bases rather than 80mm. This will make it a little easier for me to store figures and to use these bases in WAB if I choose to.
I am relieved that it doesn't seem to affect play as per the above post.
More power to the world of Impetus and B.I! I wrote my first impressions of the system on a thread on TMP today for anyone who is interested. I am finishing off my first 6-7 bases of Crusader and Fatimid foot. A dedicated eye candy/gallery section would really help to generate interest in the system, I feel.

So I've blue-tacked some African medium cavalry on a 8x3 base in a single line. I must say, it looks very pleasing. The unit looks very orderly compared to the widely dispersed Numidian cavalry on the 8x6 bases. Also, with CM sharing the same base size as FP, it makes all of the more regimented units look similar and dense on the table. I realize that I could just base two lines of CM on a 8x6 base, but I'm trying to make the models I have go along way without making more purchases.

and now they're painted, glued, sanded, and flocked. They look quite nice, and as soon as my friend with the nice camera comes over I'll get a picture and post it.
