Hi there

I am a complete newbie to Impetus and am looking for some advice for basing 28mm figures. What do most people use a numbers of figures for the various troop types in the game.

The reason I ask is the majority of my figures are based for WAB and I will be looking to create sabot bases for Impetus.

Your thoughts and comments are appreciated

well, first of all it is a question of taste so feel free to find a personal way if you prefer.
If you want to keep your figures single based you could create some nice sabot bases with "square holes" in which you can fit the figures.
My 28mm armies are
Medium/Heavy Cavalry: 4 figures (but sometimes even 3)
Light cavalry: 3 figures (but in the future will try also with 2)
Skirmishers: 2 or 3 figures
Light Infantry/Shooters: around 8 figures
Heavy Infantry: 8 to 10 figures

You can put on bases amny more miniatures but I prefer to save some money and time to paint getting a good looking army as well.

Thanks for getting back to me, this a great help and may help me to presuade others in the club that this system has advantages over others - not just in game play but in the number of miniatures actually required. Not sure the boys at Gripping Beast will be overly pleased though.

The sabot bases will probablly be made for existing armies but I can see others being created as dedicated bases solely for Impetus. I have a felling the other game we play mostly is self destructing at present.

the boys at Gripping Beast should be happy as I made a couple of 300pts armies with their figures Wink and I plan for more. Very Happy
Impetus allows you to use this scale as affordable due to the limited number of figures. A 300pts army in 28mm looks great on a 180x120cm board and requires just with 50-80 figures in most cases!! (but you can use many more)
If you have single based figures you can also use some of them to indicate disorder or opportunity status (only for Impetus) as well as separate Generals (use them as marker).

Using large bases is not compulsory, just give you the advantage of saving figs (and time to paint) and allows you to make diorama style bases, like these

yes frontage is 12cm. The latter 2 I guess are 12x12cm as they represent Large Units.

At SESWC most of the chaps are WAB players too, with bases of 20, 40 and 60 wide, so those of us using Impetus are going for SABOT bases. We have gone with the 120 x 60mm deep bases for infantry apart from skirmishers. I've used thin mounting board with a 9mm wide strip glued to the front and rear of the base, giving me a groove 120 wide x 42 deep. The strips are textured the same as the WAB bases, but the groove is just painted. With FP and FL we are going with 10 per base, 5 wide x 2 deep. These slip into the sabot base easily and can be base to base or pulled apart slightly to indicate disorder.

For skirmishers I went for only the front strip as our WAB skirmishers are on either 20, 25 or 2p coins.

I am however going to base my Florentines wholly for Impetus and am going to do a few Arthurian Saxon units wholly the Impetus way.

Hi Jack

I am working on the Sabot bases just now for existing armies, but the planned Rus will mostly likely be based for Impetus depening on how the play testing goes.

Thanks

Ross,
Hope the test games go well. Impetus are attracting more and more attention in SESWC with a big game, 6-8 players, each week.

The Roman Testudo base should be all the argument need for why to play 28mm Impetus. It looks spectaclular!

All the better it is a fully functional game unit, and no need to worry about removing single figures as casualies.

I have an old but somewhat sparse collection of Italian Wars '25s' currently being reinforced with newer '28s'. IMO they mix OK.

I've also mounted similar numbers of figures to those discussed here, but on the base sizes recommended for 15mm figures, i.e. 80mm frontages.

All the units fitted the largest 'legal' 15mm depths apart from the artillery which I increased to 120mm deep.
