Hi All

I'm painting units of Spanish to be enemies and allies of my Marian Romans. In the Iberian army list Scutarii are listed as being armed with javelins and yet I had always thought that they carried a heavy throwing weapon similar to the Roman pilum. In my most modern up to date source of information on these matters (WRGs Army Lists, Volume One, 1977!!!!!) Spanish Scutarii in both Spanish and Roman armies are equipped with HTW (Heavy Throwing Weapon). When they fight for the Romans, they can have javelins instead.

Does anybody have any thoughts on whether or not Spanish Scutarii ought to be equipped with the same weapons as Roman legionaries?

Cheers

I've been having the same thought. The Spanish falarica was very like the pilum.

Lorenzo?

Well, this theme itīs not clear.

The falarica was similar to the pilum but there were another weapon, the "soliferrum".

The name in latin it means "iron only" and was a very heavy weapon.
The historicians donīt know exactly if this weapon was useful only for "closed formations" (similar to the falange) or was used like throwing weapon. Obviously, this class of weapon, at very short range, it would be terrible because of the weight of the iron.

I think that probably were used of the two ways.

Maybe the falarica for light and skirmirser units and soliferrum for heavy units.

Hi all - it is true that I felt a little confused myself concerning javelin-armed Spanish medium foot - I play the Carthos and I have to use them according to the list - however, as I like the falcata armed Corvus Belli Spaniards alot, I chose to do as follows; I use 2 falcata armed Spanish units instead of Gauls as impetuous troops and I use a unit of Poeni light foot figures (Corvus again) as FM with javelins - OK, in fact they carry light spears, but who cares anyway!
Great set! I love it! Wink

The points about Spanish weapons are true but I doubt that they were supplied in anywhere near the numbers available to the legio. I think javelins plus an increase of impetus bonus would be sufficient to represent their differences to other trrop types. Even an increase of 1 to the I would be sufficient to help represent these differences.

Just my opinion.

Thanks
john

PS nice rules though the English version still reads a little clumsy.

That would be clumsily Wink , although in fact I don't think it does.

The writing, or more correctly the text as interpreted, is clumsy in places where many more words are used then is required. Never say with 10 words what u can with 5. I don't read clumsily but the text is definitely clumsy more so in the full version then BI but still understandable. Perhaps the English translators were trying to stay as close to the original Italian as possible but doing so can result in this sort of issue. The constant use of "in any case" is a example that stands out where some simple rewriting would produce a better read.

When they fight with the Romans, for sure Romans have their roman sword to protect themselves.
